ANCIENT MESSENE

Messene is one of the most important ancient cities, built on the southwest end of the Peloponnese, at the foot of Mount Ithomi. It was founded in 370 B.C. by General Epaminondas, following his victory against the Spartans, aiming to render it the residence of the freed Messenians.  Up to the end of the 4th century A.C., Messene formed the cultural centre of the prefecture. THE ANCIENT THEATRE OF MESSENE

The Ancient Theatre, apart from theatrical purposes, was also being used for political gatherings. Architecturally speaking, the Theatre of Messene is considered to be the ancestor of the colossal theatres and amphitheatres of the roman era. Its construction dates back to the 3rd century B.C. THE SANCTUARIES OF ITHOMI

According to the mythology, Ithomi and Neda were the nymphs who raised Zeus, when he was rescued from Cronus’s rage. Mount Ithomi, at the centre of Messenia prefecture, has been named after the one of those two local nymphs. TEMPLE OF APOLLO EPICURIUS

At the heart of the Peloponnese, in the relief landscape of Vassai, the Temple of Apollo Epicurius, a temple fully harmonized with its natural surroundings, stands out. PALACE OF NESTOR

The palace of Nestor, built on the hill of Ano Englianos, is the best preserved palace of the Mycenaean Era. At a distance of 14 kilometers from Pylos, you can visit the palace of the legendary king of the city, Nestor. The palace complex consists of four buildings, which include almost 100 apartments. MYCENAEAN CHAMBER TOMBS

Just 90 meters away from the central gate of the palace you can reach the chamber tomb, which is considered to be of King Nestor. It is a big chamber tomb, with a diameter of 9,35 meters. ANCIENT THOURIA
