Monastery JOHN THE BAPTIST - MELE

In the area of Alagonia, almost 30 kilometers away from the Messenian capital, the presence of byzantine monuments, especially Monasteries, is very remarkable.

MONASTERY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF VIRGIN MARY- MADRATSI

The Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, Madratsi or Madraki, was built in 1504, in the area of Nedousa. During the Ottoman rule it was used as a refuge and as a base of operations of the fighters of the Revolution. As legend has it, the Monastery was never invaded by Ottomans.

MONASTERY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF VIRGIN MARY- SIDEROPORTA

Sideroporta (iron door), the Monastery of the Assumption of Virgin Mary, is near Karveli village. It was built in 1586 and its first name was Panagia Perivleptos. Its modern name is due to its iron door, which was a donation to the Monastery in 1623. It is the best preserved Monastery in Alagonia.

MONASTERY OF SAINT JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN

The Monastery of Saint John the Theologian was built in the beginning of the 18th century opposite Alagonia village. Nowadays, only its chapel is preserved.

MONASTERY OF TIMIOS PRODROMOS- MELE

Mele, the Monastery of Timios Prodromos, has been named after neighboring castle Mele, at a very short distance from Artemisia village. It was built in the 17th century and nowadays the byzantine temple, which is almost covered with religious paintings, is preserved. In the 18th century, there was a school with teachers-monks in the Monastery, who used to teach theology, philosophy, geography, mathematics and Ancient Greek.
